Yorkshire is serviced by the Leeds Bradford Airport which is fully accessible to people with disabilities. Humberside Airport is located in neighbouring Lincolnshire.

Leeds Bradford Airport is home to some of the major airlines, with routes to other airports in the UK and worldwide.

Special Assistance is available to passengers who may need help to travel, such as older people, those with a physical disability, including wheelchair users, and those who experience difficulty with social interaction and communication, such as people with autism or dementia.

Facilities and assistance at Leeds Bradford Airport include:

  • Lifts to all floors
  • Disabled toilets on all floors of the building, including a Changing Places facility on the first floor
  • Wheelchairs and ramps available on request
  • Ambulift for assisting passengers with boarding and alighting the aircraft
  • Hearing induction loop available at the information desk
  • Escorted quiet route through the airport

Key tips

Always allow plenty of time to plan your journey. It may be worth considering:

  • If you will need help whilst in the airport and on the plane. Will you be travelling with mobility equipment?
  • Booking Special Assistance in advance through your airline or tour operator. Make sure you provide at least 48hrs notice of any help you need.
  • When booking Special Assistance, you should be able to provide the size of your mobility equipment, including the total weight with or without the user.
  • What local transport do you need once you arrive at your destination? Can you pre-book an accessible taxi?
  • Remember that your local Hubs Mobility Advice Service can signpost you to the correct travel operator and mobility organisations.

Special assistance

Passengers requiring assistance at Leeds Bradford Airport, such as a wheelchair ramp or use of the ambulift, are advised to inform their airline or tour operator at the time of booking.

Any requirements, including assistance within the airport and to the plane, can be discussed with the Airport’s Special Assistance Team. Contact: 0871 288 2288 or prm@lba.co.uk

Airport Assistance must be arranged at least 48 hours before passengers are due to fly.

Registered assistance dogs are welcome at Leeds Bradford Airport as part of the Pet Travel Scheme. Make sure to inform your airline in advance if this applies to you.

Leeds Bradford Airport offers sunflower lanyards for those passengers suffering from hidden disabilities such as autism, dementia and other mental health conditions.

Further information can be found on the airport’s website.

Travelling with mobility equipment

If you are travelling with a mobility aid, you should make yourself known to the Special Assistance team on arrival at the airport. Your equipment must be presented to the check-in agent to be tagged for travel.

Passengers with mobility equipment are entitled to travel within their own wheelchair or electric mobility aid, to and from the plane. Equipment will be handed to/from the ground handling team at the aircraft side.

If you are travelling with an electric mobility aid, you are required when booking to notify your airline of the make and model including battery type.

You may wish to purchase an air safe plug from a mobility shop to avoid the need to disconnect batteries.

Wheelchairs, ramps and ambulift transport are available from the Special Assistance team if required.
