Cheshire and Wirral boat

County Advice Overview

The only major waterborne transport in the region is the Mersey Ferries service from the Wirral. Mersey Ferries operate a number of cruises, as well as a commuter service from the Woodside terminal to Liverpool.

All Mersey Ferries terminals and ferries (main deck only) are accessible for wheelchair users. Accessible toilets are available at terminals and on the main decks.

There are a handful of very small scale, local ferries in Cheshire.

Key Tips

There is no dedicated parking on the Liverpool side.

Parking at Woodside terminal is payable with the PayByPhone app or by calling 0330 400 7275. You cannot pay for parking with cash; payment is card only.

Assistance with paying to park is available at Woodside terminal.

Bear in mind that the linkspan bridge (which connects the terminal to the boarding stage) can be very steep at low tide. You can check for tide times via this link.

Help With Cost

Some cruises on Mersey Ferries offer a concessionary rate for the over 60’s and National Union of Students card holders. These are not available on the commuter services.

Special Assistance

Details of Mersey Ferries accessibility information can be found via this link.

You can also call Mersey Ferries on 0151 330 1003 (7 days a week; 9am – 5:00pm) to discuss accessibility requirements.

Travelling with mobility equipment

Please note that only the main decks of the Mersey Ferries are wheelchair accessible and, for cruises, outdoor viewing space is extremely limited.

The top deck (with ample outdoor viewing) can only be reached via stairs.

Assistance dogs are very welcome and travel at no charge.

Routes and timetable

The Mersey Ferries commuter service, from Woodside terminal to Liverpool, runs morning and early evening and ticket prices start at £2.90 for an adult single with weekly, monthly and quarterly season tickets available.
